It’s nice to follow the rules. You probably like the praise you receive for following directions and getting things done. Often, following the rules involves meaningless tasks that do not contribute to business growth, or your growth and happiness.
Today, dump the rules and
- Be creative
- Make a friend
- Work from home
- Work outside
- Do something that’s not in your job description
- Start with dessert
- Don’t eat lunch at your desk
- Work standing up
- Don’t check email before 10am
- Give something away
- Promote a competitor
- Start a microbusiness
If 100% of your focus is on following their rules, you will sacrifice interest, investment, and accountability. You’ll do hard work instead of good work, and there is a difference.

I’ll start with dessert and not check my email till after 10 am! There’s an unconscious force to fit in one the one hand, but I also find that I’m fundamentally obstructive when it comes to rules as well. Oh, the paradox of being human. It’s nice to explore life outside the rules. Thanks for the encouragement!
