what really matters

You can fill a presentation with flashy slides, catch phrases and hashtags, but what really matters is that your audience wants to hear what you have to say.

You can design a blog with shiny plugins, pop ups for better subscriber conversion, and a sidebar full of ads, but what really matters is that you deliver content that will help people.

You can create a launch that drips with anticipation, but what really matters is that your product is awesome and that you make something that people will enjoy and talk about.

Give your readers/clients/people/tribe what they want.

  • Ease their pain
  • Make them smile
  • Connect
  • Show them you care

If you don’t genuinely care, don’t bother, because it really matters.

If you don’t develop an engaged platform and a community that you care about, nothing else matters.

Fully agree with this. As a web designer/developer I spend so much time working on tasks for clients that ultimately don’t net results because they a) aren’t related to what their AUDIENCE wants/needs and b) aren’t related to the base value their offers should be providing.

Lipstick on a pig and all that… (not that I have anything

Thanks Paul, I can see how that would be a struggle in your position. People see things they like on other sites and assume they need them too. There is so much bad information out there. Hopefully you can work to educate clients on what will really make a difference for a sustainable business.

I can *totally* relate. Had a client once that wanted a ginormous GIF on his homepage, with a “click this link to go to my website”. Granted, this was in 2004, but still….

So I made sure we were tracking stats. I let the stats accumulate for a couple months, showed him his homepage bounce rate, then explained what a homepage bounce rate of almost 80% meant.

We took the graphic down about 15 minutes later.

Sometimes a dose of reality is just what the doctor ordered. :)
