Less Than 33 is Ok Too

If you just started Project 333, dressing with less may be a struggle. I hope the following information will encourage you to stick with it.

When I first started this project in October of 2010, I didn’t think I would survive with only 33 items in my closet. It’s amazing how easy it is to get used to a new normal. Today, it’s a challenge for me to use all 33 items.

One season I only included 31 pieces

Accessories (8)

  • Sunglasses
  • Purse
  • Laptop Bag
  • Hat
  • Cross Bracelet
  • Bracelet
  • Gray/White Scarf
  • Green Scarf

Shoes (3)

  • Flip Flops
  • Black Flats
  • Purple Heels

Bottoms (5)

  • Jeans
  • Pants
  • White Capris
  • Short Skirt
  • Long Skirt

Tops (10)

  • Black Cardigan
  • Brown/White Striped Shirt
  • Denim Button Down
  • Black Tank
  • Gray Ruffle Shirt
  • Black/Tan Shirt
  • Black Wrap Shirt
  • Cream Sweater
  • Black/White Shirt
  • Blue/White Shirt

Coats/Jackets (3)

  • Black Blazer
  • Cream Blazer
  • Black Rain Coat

Dresses (2)

  • Orange/White Dress
  • Cream Colored Dress

Other changes I’ve noticed while dressing with less …

  • Catalogs don’t make it pass the recycling bin on the way in from the mailbox.
  • Sales, Groupons, and coupons have no influence on my purchasing habits.
  • I don’t walk through clothing stores or sections wondering what I need.
  • I don’t compare what I wear to what you wear.
  • I always have something to wear.
  • Shopping is not a hobby or recreational activity.

Dressing with less has changed my closet. Living with less has changed my life.

I’m really enjoying Project 333 so far! I am going to do June 1 – August 1 for my summer period. I’ve already posted my list to my blog and friends have been very supportive. I thought they’d make fun of me but they think it’s great. It really helps prioritize what is absolutely essential in your wardrobe! A few things I thought I had to have but realize now that I don’t. Shoes are a good example; I only need a few. I recently took a vacation for a week and I made a “spring” 333 list and basically took that with me, except for 3 items that didn’t fit. There were 4 items I didn’t even use. Thanks for a great idea; I originally only meant to do this for summer but I think I might be able to stick with it for good!

I am away from home for a bit more than two months–May 30 through August 7–and carrying less than 33 pieces. Making it all work for touring, traveling, teaching, researching, and presenting at a conference.

There is a website at http://www.catalogchoice.org where you can request that specific catalogs you receive not be sent to you anymore. It has really lightened my load from the mailbox to the house – Also, if you ever start to want to get any of the catalogs again, you can remove it from don’t send status. Save a forest!

I’ve never been into clothes that much. I can get by with only 24 items easily. Books will pose a bigger problem when I really downsize my library. 9 accessories not counting glasses, 2 dresses, 2 coats, 2 pairs of shoes, 4 bottoms, and 5 tops. I could add another pair of shoes, but they don’t fit right, making them something I hate to wear. I love Dr. Scholl’s all purpose shoes with the zippers!

After turning 38 at the end of may I decided I would jump into project 333 in an attempt to reduce the amount of crap in my wardrobe and to try to not look like I got dressed in the dark every day! I’m a week into the experiment and for the most part I am loving it. There are one or two items in my 33 that I’m not sure of but I’ll live with them for a bitoto see if they work. I have had one or two ‘I wish I had my old wardrobe’ moments but for the most part its been easier to get dressed and every day people have told me I look great. Already thinking about how my style is defining and what will make my autumn/winter collection. Thank you for sharing your wonderful idea.
