I had the great pleasure of meeting and talking with a wonderful filmmaker and new blogger, Geneva of Rose Taffy.
She recently took on Project 333 and interviewed me about my experience and thoughts about living with less.
One question she asked caught me off guard. “How has this project impacted your personal style?” I said something like, “my clothes fit me better”.
Really? My clothes fit me better? Besides being a really lame answer, I don’t think it even answered the question.
When I thought about it later, I realized that while I am no style maven, by dressing with less, I have developed a personal style. My clothes are much simpler than they used to be with a softer color palette. I do have a few pieces (like my purple heels) that pop, but for the most part I am wearing grays and blues.
While I am still trying to figure out what my personal style is, I know what it is not.
Personal style is not about…
- labels and logos
- covering up
- being disguised
- conforming
I used to wear clothes that reflected the person I thought I was supposed to be, or the person I thought people wanted to see. Now, I dress like me.
My style is…
- simple
- eclectic
- artsy
- tailored
- fun
So maybe all of those things don’t get together, but that is who I am, and it’s about time I start being me. I never would have thought I could be so expressive with so few items. I don’t need a big necklace or purse with L’s and V’s all over it to feel noticed and when I did, I was sending the wrong message.
I don’t want you to have to get past my clothing to see me and I certainly don’t want it to be a barrier for getting to know me.
