Reading Miss Minimalist’s post, Possessions as promises made me think about all the many reasons I used to buy clothes. It was a rare moment that I went shopping because I was actually in need.
Instead, I purchased clothing to
- be stylish
- look thinner
- feel powerful
- measure up
- quiet boredom
I bought clothing for those reasons and others, always thinking a new pair of shoes or a slimming jacket would help me either perform better, look better or be better. My purchases did none of those things. Instead, they delivered buyer’s remorse, debt and clutter… and then more shopping to feel better.
It took dressing with less to allow me to see my behavior for what it was. Dressing with 33 items or less for years has taught me that there is nothing that will make me better but me.
Simple is the new black.
