Welcome to Project 333 Style Stories, a brand new series featuring real people dressing with less. Your stories are so important and will inspire people to try Project 333 and discover the benefits of dressing with less. Send me your style story for consideration with 3 images of you and your 33 and answers to the questions below.
Tell us a little about yourself like what type of climate you live in, and what a typical day is like for you.
I’m a mom of a three-year old who works part-time as a birth and postpartum doula and blogger in Seattle. This means I have a wide range of activities to dress for in a wide range of weather. This month alone the temperature has gone from 50-75, sun, rain and storm. I’ve had play dates at the park, interviews with potential clients, errands on my bike, trips to the hospital and long hours at night taking care of moms and babies in various settings.
I’ve been surprised how simple and painless it has been to transition from place to place with my 33 items. Being really selective with my pieces and only picking things that firstly, all go together and secondly, all serve at least two purposes (a nice tee I can wear with a pair of shorts to the park and under a blazer to an interview) always leaves me feeling like I have plenty of choices.
Why did you start Project 333?
My friend, who always knows about the best everything, tipped me off. I was on a simplifying quest after feeling like my house (and all the toddler toys it houses) was getting out of control. It was only natural to include my wardrobe. I have really enjoyed the process and the amount of time and clarity I have regained.
What’s in your 33?
- 2 pairs of shorts – (black and patterned)
- 3 pairs of jeans – (light wash and dark and a pair of overalls)
- 4 tanks – (red, blue, grey, black)
- 4 tees – (3 grey in different weights and cuts, 1 white)
- 1 button up – (chambray)
- 3 jackets – (blazer, rain jacket, light moto jacket)
- 3 dresses – (one black, one white, one printed)
- 5 pairs of shoes – (sandals, boots, clogs, black and tan flats)
- 2 purses – (large brown leather and large tan straw)
- 6 accessories – (watch, 2 rings, one skinny belt, one wide belt)
What have you discovered as a result of dressing with less?
So much! I’ve learned that I feel much more free/organized/flexible/happy with less – of everything. I’ve applied a similar principle to my kitchen, my daughter’s wardrobe and toys, my schedule and my writing. The biggest benefit has been getting my time back. I spend so much less time choosing and sorting and wading through mess. I’ve learned that minimalism isn’t about doing without things you love, it’s about getting rid of everything else so that you can really enjoy the things you love. Nobody can love 15 sweaters at the same time.
