Weekend Wisdom: The stuff that surrounds you affects what’s inside you.
Happy Mother’s Day. That’s me in the front with my mom and little sister … a few years ago.
So I’ve been thinking about how scarcity mentality has served as a bit of a distraction lately. Like when there was a run on toilet paper and all bleach products. It made me feel anxious. Me. The person who has said over and over again, “I refuse to live in fear of not having enough.” Was I really worried about toilet paper or was it something else?
Even though most of us have enough of what need (more than enough), we still bought more … just in case. We convinced ourselves we needed more but really, we were soothing. We were soothing our fear and pain.
We may have thought that if we had more than enough hand sanitizer, we’ll be ok. Or, if we have way too much rice, beans, flour and yeast that we can protect our families.
Perhaps we’ve confused the fear of not having enough with the fear of not being safe. The problem is that when we try to fix the wrong fear, we end up with the same fear and a bunch of stuff we don’t want or need. The bigger issue is that the collective fear we share is something we can’t fix so we have to feel it.
That’s hard.
As someone who used to try to shop her feelings and pain away, I get it.
If we can slow down, be gentle with ourselves and pay attention to how we really feel and find ways to simply feel those feelings, we can avoid getting confused and stop buying things we don’t really want or need.
