Weekend Wisdom: Remove something that isn’t serving you … from your to-do list, your junk drawer and your thoughts.
Let’s do something good together.
Kaya teaches students with autism in the first and second grades. She’s created a classroom wishlist full of items that will aide her students and help her and her teacher’s assistants to keep the classroom running smoothly.
She says, “I can’t emphasize enough what an impact those donations make. People with disabilities are often an after thought, especially within public school systems. It’s a shame that teachers are made to fundraise and purchase not only the basic supplies for their students, but also resources to support their students in accessibility, social, emotional and play based learning. I’m not going to pretend that fulfilling my classroom wishlist is going to level the playing field for my students who face many barriers created by ableism and racism but I will say that taking small steps matters. Providing our students with means to communication, access to sensory toys, safe spaces, learning aides, special interest resources, and even snacks and drinks – makes a really big difference in how each student navigates the challenges they face.” Fulfilling Kays’s list won’t take much from each of us in terms of time and money if we work together AND it will make a world of difference for her and her students. See what’s on her list and contribute here!
