Weekend Wisdom: Simplifying often starts in chaos so make big change small. Find simplicity by going outside, decluttering a small drawer or by removing a few items from your closet that you never wear. The tiny steps matter.
Coming home.
I took that picture as I was walking through my parents town in Italy. The week before, I visited my in-laws in picturesque New Hampshire during foliage season. I saw my brother-in-law in Germany and my sister and I have been exploring every cup of coffee throughout Europe. We’ve had coffee in Zurich, Bregenz, Markdorf, Meerburg…, Rome, Arezzo, Florence, Brussels and Amsterdam. And of course there were treats with almost every cup of coffee.
Seeing my family after years of Zoom calls, phone calls, emails and the occasional card through the mail has been so special. It’s also been interesting to rethink my work again. How, when, what, why … all the questions are out in the universe and I’m hopeful that soon, I’ll have some answers. As John Steinbeck said, “People Don’t Take Trips. Trips Take People.” This trip took me. It took me back to friends and family, it took me to the joy of exploring new cities and the curiosity of getting lost.
Thanks to this trip I was taken to the best Cacio e Pepe and the butteriest croissant. It took me to moments of laughing so hard I cried and crying so hard I laughed. This trip brought me back to my daily journaling practice and gave me clarity on some upcoming projects. You don’t have to take a trip to enjoy the concept of coming home, coming back to you. Do it anytime, after a hard time, during a transition, if you feel overwhelmed or unsettled or anytime it feels good to reset and come home.
