Weekend Wisdom: Things can be calm within me even when it is chaotic around me.
Slowing down.
There were a few times on my recent trip when I wasn’t sure where the chaos was coming from. I had to ask myself where I felt the rush. In airports, train stations and busy Rome streets, I had to separate my feelings from my surroundings.
When I feel hurried, anxious or chaotic, I ask myself, “Is this within me or around me?” It’s usually around me (on a trip or at home) and I can remind myself that it’s not my responsibility to absorb the rush or the chaos. This is a practice. If I don’t slow down enough to ask the question, I can get overwhelmed pretty easily. Instead, I practice. I notice. I remind myself, things can be calm within me even when it’s chaotic around me.
