Weekend Wisdom: Resist the urge to fill your time with to-dos and give your ideas and dreams room to unfold.
The work is never done.
Lately I’ve been digging into the disaster that is productivity and hustle culture and the pressure to do more. From tasks at work to everyday things like laundry and cleaning, we could dedicate every waking moment to work. It never stops. It’s too much. That’s why we play games like “catching up” and “getting ahead” to be more efficient and get more done but we know that we will never win that game. We would have won by now.
So I’m playing a different game. Instead of tricking or hacking my way into producing more, I’m giving myself some simple work hours. I’m choosing a gentler pace and a softer response to the call of more. I can work whenever I want and I love my work so sometimes it’s challenging to set it aside. When I do though, I come back refreshed and excited with more to offer.
The most important strategies to winning the game of working less?
1. Don’t measure who you are by what you accomplish.
2. Dump perfection.
3. Do things that are fun for you.
4. Prioritize rest.
Side note … I understand that working fewer hours isn’t an option for everyone and that some stages of life are more full than others but even then, there is still room for small shifts. I’d love to hear your recommendations.
