Weekend Wisdom: The easiest way to enjoy your favorite things is to only own your favorite things.
May accountability move us forward.
I was relieved and happy and sad and overwhelmed when I heard about the guilty verdicts this week. Yes, I had my own feelings, and thought about how this impacted the systems in place moving forward, but I was mostly thinking about people of color. How do they feel? While this may have been the desired outcome, it’s still a painful place to be.
Layla Saad, The Author of Me and White Supremacy wrote the following on Instagram, “As many have said, this isn’t justice. This is accountability. We can absolutely celebrate this moment of accountability. But we can also hold in mind that the fact that many of us were unsure if accountability would even come tells us how very far we are away from justice. And that should keep us pushing forward. Especially those who are privileged by a system that makes accountability and justice for Black people, Indigenous People, and People of Colour, a rarity.”
After reading that and other words from People of Color, I had a better understanding of where we are.
Is this directly connected to living with less … maybe not. It is however connected to living with intention and knowing and trusting ourselves. If there’s a small part of you wondering why I’m not “sticking to decluttering” or something that feels more closely connected to simplicity, consider how you feel when I write about taking walks, flowers, trees, reading books or my cat, Wilbur snoring (he seriously snores).
My life, and our connection here is about more than getting rid of stuff and shortening our to-do lists (although I am passionate about those things). It’s about creating a more joyful, healthy life for ourselves and the people around us.
